Understanding 550 Paracord Construction

550 paracord (Type III, MIL-C-5040H) has two components: the braided nylon outer sheath and seven inner strands. The outer sheath is usable as general cordage. The inner strands can be pulled out individually for lighter tasks. Each inner strand is itself made of two twisted strands that can be further separated into thin threads for fine work.

This multi-layer construction means one piece of 100-foot paracord contains:

  • 100 feet of sheath cordage (strong, abrasion-resistant)
  • 700 feet of inner strand cordage
  • 1,400 feet of fine thread if you separate each inner strand

You are carrying a significant amount of cordage in a compact, lightweight package.

Shelter and Structural Uses

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Tent/tarp ridgeline | Run between trees; use taut-line hitches for adjustment | | Guy lines | Attach tarp or shelter corners to stakes | | Hammock suspension | Tie to trees with bowlines; use whoopie sling method for adjustment | | Lashing poles | Use clove hitch start, full wraps, frapping; not as grippy as natural fiber | | Bear hang | PCT method or simple hang; 10mm biners make it faster | | Clothes/gear drying line | String between trees; sag is adjustable with taut-line hitches | | Shelter door flap tie-back | Simple half-hitches | | Tent repair — broken guyline | Replacement section; 20 feet handles most tents |

Tool and Gear Applications

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Knife lanyard | Prevents loss; tie figure eight stop knot at grip | | Pack repair — broken strap | Temporary replacement with two half-hitches | | Boot/shoe lace replacement | Inner strand works; sheath works for larger eyelets | | Tourniquet backup | Use sheath and stick; NOT a replacement for a commercial TQ | | Splint lashing | Secure improvised splint to limb; check circulation after | | Sling construction | Improvised arm sling from full sheath paracord | | Belt replacement | Loop through belt loops; basic but functional | | Zipper pull replacement | Short loop through zipper tab | | Pack frame lashing | Secure external gear to frame or load | | Shoulder strap padding wrap | Wrap around sharp strap edges |

Hunting, Fishing, and Trapping

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Fishing line | Inner strand, single ply: ~10-15 lb test. Works for panfish | | Snare wire | Inner strand twisted together for small game; check local regulations | | Snare support cord | Hang snare trigger system at proper height | | Fishing stringer | String through fish gills to hold catch in water | | Improvised net cordage | Time-intensive; inner strands for lightweight gill net | | Bow stringer | Emergency replacement; use sheath, several strands twisted | | Arrow fletching thread | Single inner strand | | Trotline main line | Sheath, tied between two points over water |

Camp and Cooking

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Pot hanger over fire | Tie sheath around pot bail; hang from horizontal pole | | Fire bundle carrier | Wrap gathered wood bundle | | Pot lifting — hot handle wrap | Wrap grip area; minimal insulation but prevents burns | | Food bag suspension | Hang from a tree limb away from camp | | Cutting board lashing | Secure improvised cutting surface to work area | | Apron tie | No hardware needed |

Navigation and Signaling

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Trail marker | Bright orange paracord looped around branches; highly visible | | Trip line | Stretched low across a path as an alert system | | Distance measuring | Pre-mark a 10-foot length for field distance estimation | | Pace counter beads | Make from knots in paracord | | Tying gear to pack outside for visibility | Bright colors aid searchers |

Medical and Safety

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Splint lashing | Secure rigid splint to broken limb | | Improvised crutch lashing | Cross-lash two poles to create T-shaped top | | Wound closure | Inner thread only; emergency field suture substitute. Clean first. | | IV line holder | Hang bag from improvised arm if needed | | Drag lasso — casualty movement | Loop under armpits to drag a casualty | | Safety line | Tether person to anchor in vertical terrain |

Vehicle and Transport

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Broken tow strap — light loads | Sheath only; limited to very light vehicles on flat ground | | Bungie replacement | Not elastic, but can secure cargo | | Bike rack cargo tie | Securing gear to a rack or load | | Side mirror tie-back | Keep mirror folded during trail driving | | Interior cargo netting | String across trunk or truck bed interior |

Fine Work Using Inner Strands

| Use | Notes | |-----|-------| | Button replacement thread | Single inner strand split further | | Gear repair — field sewing | Needle and single inner strand | | Trap trigger string | Thin, low-visibility | | Tying arrows to a quiver | Low weight, low profile | | Improvised dental floss | Single inner strand only; clean it first |

How to Extract Inner Strands

  1. Cut your paracord to the length you need
  2. Hold the sheath in one hand and pinch the inner strands with your other
  3. Push the sheath toward your pinching hand — it bunches up
  4. Continue pushing while pulling the inner strands free from one end
  5. The sheath strips off cleanly, leaving the seven inner strands

For fine thread: take one inner strand and untwist it — it separates into two single-ply threads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 550 paracord?

Military-spec Type III parachute cord rated to 550 pounds breaking strength. Constructed of a nylon sheath over 7 nylon inner strands. Each inner strand is itself a 2-ply cord. The inner strands can be removed for fine cordage, fishing line, or thread.

How much paracord should I stock?

Minimum 100 feet per person in your group. 500 feet is better. It is cheap, lightweight, and you will find uses for it constantly. Store it coiled, out of UV light to extend lifespan.

Can I use paracord inner strands for fishing?

Yes. The inner strands are roughly 10-15 pound test — adequate for panfish and small to medium game fish. Not ideal for large fish. Remove the nylon sheath and separate the inner strands as needed.
